K-12 Digital Transformation report

 A survey in 2023 revealed that K-12 digital transformation efforts are still in their early stages, with nearly two-thirds of respondents indicating they have not yet begun to implement their strategies or technology initiatives for digital transformation. However, around 36% are in various stages of implementation, and only about a third of respondents expressed confidence in their understanding of digital transformation, with IT leaders showing higher levels of understanding compared to non-IT leaders.

Teachers' Need for More Technology Help

While novice teachers may have grown up using technology as "digital natives," two new studies discussed find they still may need support in using education technology in the classroom. One researcher found that teacher training on technology did not always align with the skills new teachers need on the job, which became evident during student teaching. Preservice teachers also have difficulty choosing appropriate technology for their classroom

Educational technology priorities survey

More than 90% of school district leaders across the country say their top priority for education technology is to personalize learning for students, according to a survey from the Center for Digital Education. The survey also reveals that about three-quarters of districts offer blended-learning options and more educators are expressing concern about student data and privacy issues.

NMC Horizon Report

The yearly NMC/EduCause report explores the ways learning, teaching, and creative inquiry are affected by:
  • Key trends accelerating higher education technology adoption
  • Significant challenges impeding higher education technology adoption
  • Important developments in technology for higher education
Illustrating the educational technology developments, 109 project submissions were received and of these, 18 were selected for inclusion in the Horizon Report.

Questions to Address Parents’ Concerns Regarding Educational Technology

According to a new book written by Joe Clement and Matt Miles titled Screen Schooled, students are now strongly tethered to their digital devices and entertainment media. They emphasize that “the new digital world is a toxic environment for the developing minds of young people. Rather than making digital natives superlearners, it has stunted their mental growth.” In their book, they recommend that teachers reject most of educational technology and instead, teach simply and directly to encourage understanding and thought. They want to improve student skills and human interaction, not show them how to look up stuff on Google. Clement and Miles estimated, based on several studies, that about 75 percent of high school students walk the halls with cellphones in their hands rather than in pockets or purses. In order to address this problem, the authors suggest that parents ask questions at PTA meetings regarding the advantages of using technology. They suggest parents should ask questions on improvements that the use of screens has had on students’ academic achievement levels, and whether school officials have any data to back up such claims. By asking the questions, the authors said, parents can be more informed about the use of technology in their children’s educational experiences.

Tech-enhanced instruction study

This national report focuses on the emergence of pixel based digital tools, specifically, videos, games, animations and simulations, as legitimate vehicles for learning. Key findings follow:
  • Simulations are more widely used by teachers in virtual classes (23%) and teachers who have implemented a flipped learning model (26%) or a blended learning model (17%).
  • 78% of middle school students tap into online videos, and 61% are playing online games, all in service of various types of self-directed learning goals.
  • School principals (84%) are almost unanimous in their belief that the effective use of technology within instruction is important for student success. However, they do acknowledge challenges or barriers to meeting the expectation of effective technology usage.
  • Half of administrators note that the implementation of digital content resources such as videos, simulations and animations was already generating positive student outcome results
  • Almost 60% of technology leaders say that one-quarter of instructional materials in their schools today are digital, not paper-based; 26% say that their level of paperless-ness is 50%.
  • The top subject areas in which the students in grades 6-12 watch videos to support homework, research projects or studying are science (66%), math (59%), social studies/history (53%) and English/language arts (45%).
  • When asked what was holding back further expansion of their digital learning visions, 57% of principals say the lack of teacher training on how to integrate digital content within instruction is their top barrier.

Technology Counts report

This annual report synthesizes the state of US technology in education. Some findings include:
- Many teachers see themselves as risk takers or early adopters in using tech, although on the whole teachers have been slow to adapt their instruction in light of tech
- The main barrier for tech integration, according to teachers, is a lack of digital learning devices
- The main uses of tech are drill/practice, individual projects, and research
- the best type of training is ideas shared by other teachers.
